Colors Sorting Mats Game

May 17, 2018 by Kelly Smith

My students LOVE any kind of COLORFUL games and puzzles. In the beginning of the school year, we work a lot on colors and sorting. These sorting mats are a perfect way to help students practice recognizing colors and sorting at the same time!

LET’S PREP!

To prep this game for my students, I printed all of the pieces on cardstock and laminated for durability. Then I cut out the sorting mats, as well as the puzzle pieces. I separated them into two piles for students. One pile had all of the sorting mats in it.

The next pile, had all of the puzzle pieces.

LET’S PLAY!

This game includes color mats and puzzle pieces for the following colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, and gray. To play, students simply grabbed a sorting mat, and looked at the color of the crayon that was show in the corner. Next, they needed to find, the 5 puzzle pieces with the same color to complete their mat.

Students had so much fun sorting all of the different color puzzle pieces onto the mats!

This is a great game that can be used multiple times throughout the school year as an independent station once students are comfortable playing it themselves.

As my students become more comfortable with colors, we move onto color words! I loved using these color words reading pages with my students this year. It really helped them to work on beginning reading skills, as well as color words.

These color words writing pages were another fun tool that really helped my students to become confident with using their color words!

Both of these color words pages are available in my color words pack.
